Luzerne County Chambers of Commerce Aim to Save Residents Nearly $14 Million

For the last couple of years, homeowners have had the option to shop between third party suppliers for residential electricity savings.  Whether you've realized it or not, the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce and the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce’s ChamberChoice Energy program, managed by OnDemand Energy Solutions, has continuously been negotiating with suppliers to bring the best possible solutions to our members. Last week, representatives struck a phenomenal deal.  If everyone in Luzerne County took advantage of the fixed rate, the result would be that county residents would realize a total savings of nearly $90 Million annually.

The current price to compare for residential meters is 7.533 cents per kilowatt-hour (kWh), the lowest price in quite some time as energy markets have continued to weaken; however, the low utility rates do not provide a guaranteed rate for more than 90 days.  The Greater Hazleton, Greater Pittston, and Greater Wilkes-Barre Chambers are pleased to announce that our new Chamber rate being offered through FirstEnergy Solutions is 6.45 cents/kWh fixed for two years until December 2014.  The rate, which was initially exclusive to Chamber members and their employees, has now been extended to the friends and family of Chamber members.

Luzerne County is comprised of approximately 148,752 residential homes, each using approximately 10,000  kWh estimate a year.  If each resident saves one cent per kWh savings (many will be closer to 1.5 cents/kWh as many rates are currently in the high 7’s and low 8’s), we’re anticipating a total potential savings of at least $14 Million annually.

According to President Donna Palermo of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce, Bill Moore, CEO and President of the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce, and Rosemary Dessoye, Executive Vice President of the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce, “Our chambers work diligently to carry out our mission of providing services and benefits for our membership and our affiliates through many value-added programs.  Our commercial and residential electricity programs, through our Chamber member buying consortium, ChamberChoice, in conjunction with one of the most highly recognized and successful energy consultants in Pennsylvania and the entire country, OnDemand Energy Solutions, allows our Chambers to continue improving this program as the energy market fluctuates.  With our combined efforts, along with our generation supplier FirstEnergy Solutions, we look forward to improving the quality of life and economic vitality of Luzerne County which can now be realized through this just released residential offer.  We are excited and proud to be able to provide an opportunity for every household in the PPL service area to save significantly on their electricity purchases.

The ChamberChoice/OnDemand Energy program will enable Luzerne County residential electric users to enroll with FirstEnergy Solutions which is one of the nation’s largest energy suppliers.  There are no fees to enroll and typical savings begins approximately 45 days after your enrollment is submitted.  PPL will continue to be the electric utility company delivering power to your home and will read your meter and restore service in the event of a power outage.

The Hazleton, Pittston and Wilkes-Barre chambers strongly urges individuals to initiate the savings process by visiting and click on the residential button on the bottom right side of the home page.  From the residential landing page, merely select your appropriate utility to begin the switch.  For general questions about the program, please contact the Chamber of Commerce in your area: Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce at 455-1509, the Greater Pittston Chamber of Commerce at 655-1424 or the Greater Wilkes-Barre Chamber of Commerce at 823-2101.

FirstEnergy Solutions, a subsidiary of FirstEnergy Corp. (NYSE: FE), provides competitive electric generation supply and other energy-related products and services to more than two million customers, and is a licensed supplier in Ohio, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Michigan and Illinois.
